Now that the 60-40 system has been scraped, JEE Main candidates must take note that their rank will be based on their marks scored in Main. However, Class 12 marks are also eligible for consideration as is officially notified by the MHRD:

“For the candidates to qualify for admission in the IITs/NITs/IIITs and such other CFTIs whose admissions are based on the JEE ranks, they should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th Class exam, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class exam conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST students the qualifying mark would be 65% in the 12th Class exam.”

As a result, the current method to calculate rank will be in the following 4 steps:

  1. 4 marks will be allocated to each correct answer,
  2. 1 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer,
  3. final score will be computed from the above, and
  4. the CBSE will determine the cutoff and accordingly rank will be allocated.

In the event of a tie (same score shared by two students), the following steps will be taken to allocate specific rank to each:

  1. The candidate with higher marks in Math will get higher rank. If tie persists,
  2. the candidate with higher marks in Physics will get higher rank. If tie persists,
  3. it will be resolved by finding ratio of positive marks over negative marks and the candidate with higher absolute value will get better rank. If tie still persists,
  4. both will be given the same rank.
